Reference vs Referrence - I think I need some help here..
11th Sep, 2014 at 3:53pm

What I know so far is that it goes like this.. : refer, referred, referral, referring.. ok but why reference?

I've read regarding doubling the "r" when using the -ing form at words ending at an emphasized syllable.
I understand the correct form of the word is reference but googling around pops up both terms in several cases.

So, can referrence ever be an actual word or is it simply misspelled?
Why doesn't doubling happen on it?

(The forum's dictionary marks it as wrong with red underlining..
Just like googling though that is not an actual word but we use it widely as a custom one.. Tongue )

Maybe there is a different meaning between these 2 words?
I don't get it..

Maybe a native English speaker could help us out here.. Smiley

Yes, those would be two different words. Referrence, if it is even a word, might be a legal term. It is definitely not common and none of the online dictionaries acknowledge it, so it is probably wrong.

Reference is usually used in terms of a library (books that can not be loaned but read on site). It means to refer or allude to. You don't usually use it in 'reference' to referring referrals.

Hmm.. rather complicating! But I loved that sentence :

Quote:
You don't usually use it in 'reference' to referring referrals.

You could also have said that :
Quote:
You don't usually refer to it in 'reference' to referring referrals.

It makes sense.. Smiley

Ok, just for the record we use the term "entity reference" in software engineering.. Smiley
